A contractor quoting a mini-split install in Bartholomew County has to size the system for what this area actually demands, and the local weather record is part of that picture. 57 severe weather events were recorded in Bartholomew County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here, not a standing condition, which means a system that has been running poorly was most likely undersized at installation or has accumulated years of deferred maintenance. The weather record does not drive the sizing conversation the way it would in a harder-hit area. What drives it is the house, the load, and whether the original install was done right.

Basement or crawl space with concrete block walls and a bare wood joist ceiling, where insulated metal ductwork runs overhead, and a coiled flexible duct and two cardboard boxes sit on the concrete floor.

Electrical panels in houses this old were sized for the appliances and systems that existed when they were built, and mini-splits draw power in patterns that older service was never planned around. Half the homes in Bartholomew County, Indiana were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap is where a mini-split installation in this county gets decided: whether the existing panel has the capacity a new unit requires, and whether any subpanel work needs to happen first. A contractor who skips that check and quotes the equipment alone is quoting the smaller part of the job.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What They Do

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall, with a sofa in one room and a bed in another.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall, inside the living space where comfort is needed. A contractor fastens it there and runs refrigerant lines through a small penetration in the wall to the equipment outside. That outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket against the exterior of the house and holds the compressor and the coil that do the system's core work.

A refrigerant line set runs through that wall opening, bundled with a condensate drain line and the electrical connections that tie the two units together. A disconnect box mounts on the exterior wall near the condenser, giving a contractor a local shutoff point for service access.

The drawing beside this text shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how the configuration applies to your house.
