Sizing a mini-split for Gibson County means accounting for what the climate actually asks of the equipment, not just the square footage of the house. 127 severe weather events were recorded in Gibson County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition here, and a contractor who ignores it when selecting equipment capacity and mounting placement is leaving real operating stress unaddressed. A unit installed with that load in mind, with proper line-set routing and secure exterior mounting, carries the work differently than one dropped in by the numbers.

Older wiring is where mini-split installations in Gibson County most often stall. Half the homes in Gibson County, Indiana were built in 1974 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Homes built that long ago were wired for the loads of their time, and what a licensed contractor finds at the panel decides whether the install is straightforward or whether an electrical upgrade has to be quoted alongside the equipment. The ductwork question does not apply to a mini-split, but the electrical one always does, and in stock this age it answers differently than it would in a newer house.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and fan that do the system's heavy work.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture out of the indoor unit to the exterior. A dedicated electrical disconnect gets mounted near the outdoor unit so a contractor can safely isolate the system.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how they apply to your specific house.
