Sizing a mini-split in Vigo County starts with what the climate actually asks of the equipment. 76 severe weather events were recorded in Vigo County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing part of the operating environment, not a rare disruption, and a contractor has to factor that load into how they size and position a system from the start. A unit undersized for real outdoor stress will run longer and harder than its design assumes. That changes which model fits the house and where the head units belong.

Basement or crawlspace with exposed wooden floor joists, a large galvanized sheet-metal duct trunk with an insulated flexible duct elbow, concrete block walls, a coiled gray flexible hose and two cardboard boxes on the concrete floor.

The electrical panel a house was built with tells a contractor what the original owner expected to draw, and in much of Vigo County that expectation was set a long time before mini-split systems existed. Half the homes in Vigo County, Indiana were built in 1968 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A ductless unit runs on its own dedicated circuit, and whether the service already in the house can carry that circuit without a panel upgrade is the question that shapes the quote. Ductwork is not a factor on a mini-split job, so the electrical is where a contractor looks first.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air handlers connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil, which are the mechanical core of the whole system.

A set of refrigerant lines runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture from the indoor unit to the outside. A dedicated electrical line feeds the outdoor unit, and a control board inside each unit manages communication between them.

The drawing shows the general layout of a standard mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines what that looks like for this particular house.

Vigo County weather puts real demand on heating and cooling equipment year-round. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions holds up better than one spec'd without that picture in mind.
