Sizing a mini-split for a DeKalb County home starts with what the house asks of the system, not with worst-case weather assumptions. 66 severe weather events were recorded in DeKalb County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event a system encounters now and then, not a constant operating pressure. A contractor quoting an install here will focus on room volume, envelope quality, and how the indoor and outdoor units are positioned and connected. Those variables determine whether the system runs efficiently for years or struggles from day one.

Older electrical panels were sized for the loads of their era, and a mini-split draws differently than what those panels were designed to feed. Half the homes in DeKalb County, Indiana were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between the original service and today's equipment is where installation decisions actually get made. A contractor checking whether the existing panel can carry the new unit before touching anything else is not being cautious for its own sake; the wiring already in the house is what sets the scope and the price.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house interior showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and pushes conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and coils that do the heavy work of the system.

A set of refrigerant lines and a condensate drain line run through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, and a dedicated electrical line feeds the outdoor unit from the panel. Some configurations add a second or third indoor head, each paired back to the same outdoor unit through its own line set.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your house.
