Sizing a mini-split in Jefferson County starts with what the building actually demands, not with worst-case storm assumptions. 75 severe weather events were recorded in Jefferson County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a real but intermittent pressure on equipment here, not the defining condition of every cooling season. A contractor quoting an installation still has to account for the structure's envelope, the room volumes, and how the unit will be positioned and charged, because those variables drive performance far more than the weather record does. Get the load calculation wrong and no amount of durable hardware fixes it.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls, a bare concrete floor, exposed wood floor joists, and insulated metal ductwork running along the ceiling, with two cardboard boxes and a coiled gray flexible hose on the floor.

The electrical panel in much of this county's housing was designed around whatever ran in the house when it was new, and mini-splits draw differently than what those panels were sized for. Half the homes in Jefferson County, Indiana were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a mini-split installation here pulls the panel cover before anything else, because the answer to whether a new circuit is needed determines a material portion of the job cost. Ductwork is not the variable for a mini-split, but the electrical absolutely is.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway building interior with two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned. It is the piece a homeowner sees every day, and it is where conditioned air enters the living space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and houses the compressor and the coil that release or absorb heat.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, removing the moisture the air handler pulls from the air. A dedicated disconnect box is mounted near the outdoor unit to allow the system to be safely de-energized.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your specific home.
