A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Crawford County has to account for what the climate actually puts on the equipment, not just the square footage of the rooms. 97 severe weather events were recorded in Crawford County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition here, and a system sized or mounted without accounting for it will be working against the local reality from day one. Refrigerant line routing, mounting height, and unit selection all carry more weight in a place where the weather loads are consistent rather than rare.

Unfinished basement or crawl space with exposed wooden floor joists, insulated flexible and metal ductwork, a concrete block wall, a coiled black corrugated pipe, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Ductwork in houses built for an earlier generation of heating and cooling was sized around that equipment, and the electrical panels were drawn up to the same assumptions. Half the homes in Crawford County, Indiana were built in 1984 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a mini-split installation here starts by opening the panel, because a system that runs on a dedicated circuit may need a service upgrade before anything else can move forward. What the ductwork carries is a separate question, and in stock this age the answer shapes both the installation plan and the final price.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, pulling room air across its coil and pushing conditioned air back out. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor, which does the heaviest mechanical work of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small penetration in the wall, carrying refrigerant back and forth as the system operates. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to the outside, and a control wire ties the indoor and outdoor units together so they work as one.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece gets positioned and routed in your home.
