A contractor quoting a mini-split install in Orange County has to account for what the local climate asks of a system year to year, and that picture is clearer than most homeowners expect. 69 severe weather events were recorded in Orange County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At roughly that rate, severe weather here is real but not relentless, which means sizing decisions and installation quality carry more weight than weather resilience alone. A system that was set up poorly or sized for the wrong load will struggle here well before the weather becomes an explanation.

A basement or crawlspace with a large galvanized metal duct and insulated flexible duct running along wood floor joists above a concrete block wall, with two cardboard boxes and a coiled corrugated hose on the concrete floor.

Electrical service installed for the equipment of its era was not sized around what a mini-split draws today. Half the homes in Orange County, Indiana were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an install here will open the panel before pricing anything else, because the wiring is where the job either proceeds or picks up an additional scope. The ductwork question largely disappears with a mini-split, since the system runs without it, but the panel stays in every calculation.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with a dark tiled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor split air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It pulls room air across its coil and delivers treated air back into the space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor and the components that shed or absorb heat.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air. The outdoor unit also has its own electrical disconnect mounted nearby.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house and how each piece gets positioned.
