Sizing a mini-split in Kosciusko County requires a contractor to treat weather load as a live variable in the install decision. 141 severe weather events were recorded in Kosciusko County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, the system a contractor specifies has to handle genuine swings in demand, which affects both the capacity chosen and where the outdoor unit is placed and anchored. A unit undersized for this kind of load will run at its ceiling more often than the manufacturer's warranty assumes, and a poorly sited outdoor unit compounds that pressure. The install choices made on day one are the ones this county's weather will test.

Electrical service is what decides how a mini-split installation goes in a significant share of Kosciusko County homes. Half the homes in Kosciusko County, Indiana were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built in that period were wired for the loads of their time, and a mini-split draws differently than what those panels were sized for. A contractor will open the electrical panel before quoting the rest of the job, because what is already there either supports the new unit or it does not, and the answer changes the scope of the work.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and pushes conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket against an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and coil that do the heavy work of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture from the indoor handler to the outside. A dedicated electrical disconnect is mounted near the outdoor unit so the contractor has a safe shutoff point close to the equipment.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for this house.
