A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Grant County has to account for what the local climate actually asks of the equipment, because sizing decisions made against a mild assumption will land wrong here. 77 severe weather events were recorded in Grant County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition rather than an occasional disruption, and a contractor who treats it as a background variable will undersize refrigerant capacity or pick mounting locations that leave components exposed. The install has to be built for what this area runs against year after year.

Older electrical panels are what stall mini-split installations in Grant County more than anything else a contractor pulls back to inspect. Half the homes in Grant County, Indiana were built in 1963 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Homes built around that era were wired for the loads of the time, and a mini-split's dedicated circuit requirements often exceed what the original service panel was designed to handle. Ductwork is not a factor with a ductless system, so the panel becomes the first thing a contractor has to assess and sometimes the first thing that drives a change order.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by a line to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building, with a sofa and bed inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is the piece a homeowner sees every day. It draws in room air, conditions it, and pushes it back out. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket along an exterior wall, and is where the bulk of the mechanical work happens.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs alongside it to carry moisture away from the indoor unit. Each indoor zone gets its own handler, so a multi-zone setup adds handlers while sharing a single outdoor unit.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the specifics of your house.
