Sizing a mini-split for a house in Delaware County means the contractor has to account for what this climate actually demands before settling on a unit. 88 severe weather events were recorded in Delaware County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At roughly that pace, severe weather is a regular part of operating conditions here, not a once-in-a-while exception, so load calculations that ignore it will produce an undersized or marginal install. What a contractor specifies for refrigerant line length, indoor head placement, and unit capacity reflects how hard the system will run during the seasons that push it hardest.

Unfinished basement or crawl space with exposed wooden floor joists, insulated flexible and metal ductwork, a concrete block wall, a coiled black corrugated pipe, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Electrical panels in much of this county's housing were originally sized for appliances and heating equipment from an earlier era. Half the homes in Delaware County, Indiana were built in 1967 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split system draws on circuits that may not exist yet, and adding them to a panel that was never built for today's load is where the real scope of the job gets settled. Ductwork is beside the point for a mini-split, but the electrical is not, and a contractor here looks at the service entrance before the wall gets touched.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted mini-split indoor units connected by line sets to a single outdoor condenser beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It draws room air across its coil and delivers conditioned air back into the space. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the home and houses the compressor and condenser coil, doing the heavy mechanical work of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small hole in the wall, carrying refrigerant back and forth. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, removing moisture the coil pulls from the air. A dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit, and a control wire connects both units so they operate together.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your specific home.

Severe Weather Events in Delaware County

Weather puts a direct load on heating and cooling equipment, and that load is shaped by local conditions. A mini-split sized and installed for what Delaware County actually sees will hold up better than one spec'd to a generic standard.
